WHY HIRE AN ATTORNEY FOR A SPEEDING TICKET
It happens every day. It is not just you. You are driving to work with the music playing, starbucks in hand with your mind on a million things. Suddenly you see the flashing lights behind you. It may be San Antonio Police, Bexar County sheriff, or a Justice of the Peace Constable. Either way your day is thrown off. For whatever reason you a being pulled over, there is a good chance you are getting a ticket for something. The most common citation issued is a speeding ticket. But the problem with getting a speeding ticket is that it usually results in more. Maybe you forgot your wallet or did not print out your most recent insurance policy. If that is the case, you will probably get a citation for not having your driver's license and for failure to maintain financial responsibility. And if you have a warrant for a prior offense, your day is over because you are getting arrested.
So now that you have at least an at least speeding ticket, how to you handle it? Your first option is to just pay off the citations. The problem with this option is that it will result in convictions on all of the citations. This could result in points on your license and surcharges being assessed by DPS. Did you know that a conviction for failure to maintain financial responsibility or not having a license can result in DPS assessing surcharges against you in the amount of $250 per year for three years? I see it all the time. Somebody decides to pay off a no insurance citation but they do not know about the surcharges. Suddenly it is three years later; they have not paid the surcharges and do not realize that their license has been suspended for not paying the surcharges. Before they know it, they are getting another ticket for driving with a suspended license. Now that ticket for not having insurance can cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
The next option is to go into court to try to fight it or work out a deal. Weather it is San Antonio Municipal Court or one of the Justice of the Peace Courts; it is not going to be easy. You are most likely not going to be able to speak with the judge. If you are lucky, you will get to speak t o a prosecutor. They will make you an offer but will not be able to give you any advice. You are not going to know how this will affect your driving record or if surcharges will be assessed. And be ready to waste your day. It can take hours to take care of one ticket. And sometimes it can take several appearances.
